When Emmanuel Macron stated his intention to recognise Palestinian statehood, the move sparked a fierce reaction from Israeli leadership and caused a diplomatic crisis with the US.

Netanyahu wrote a message asserting the French government of not doing enough to confront rising antisemitism across the country. His letter stated that recognising Palestine would only worsen antisemitic sentiments.

Reacting, France’s government rejected the Israeli leader’s comments as “unacceptable” and emphasised that France needs no instruction on ways to fight anti-Jewish prejudice.

The nation has also struggled tackling systemic discrimination, such as acts directed at Muslim individuals. Despite ongoing appeals for change, no effective systems are in place to fight structural prejudice.

The decision additionally prompts questions about the president’s motives. After losing political leverage, he may be seeking a mark on the world stage.

Endorsing sovereignty earlier might have had an impact. Taking this step today, however, appears as a calculated gesture rather than a genuine effort toward a resolution.
